Stuffed French Bread

Right before my first child was born, we would occasionally go to one of those meal assembly places.  We stocked our freezer in the months before he was born.  And it was so great to have those items handy in those newborn days.  We’ve since moved and they don’t have the same franchise we went to where we live now.  There were a few recipes that were real standouts and I’ve tried to recreate.  This is one of them.

It sounds kinda weird, right?  You’re used to hearing stuffed french toast maybe, but french bread, not so much.  This is a perfect fall and winter sandwich.  It gets baked and  served warm.  Its savory and yummy.  This can easily be an entrée for lunch or dinner or it can be served as a snack, appetizer or even super  bowl food.  This is good stuff.

I’ve done my best to replicate the original.  When made at the meal assembly place, it called for 2 loaves I think.  I do know that you can freeze this whole thing and bake from frozen.  Its pretty cool.

Ingredients

Stuffed French Bread

  • 1 Loaf French Bread
  • 1/2 cup whipped or I can’t believe it’s not  butter (softened)
  • 1/2 cup whipped cream cheese (softened)
  • 1/3 cup dried, minced onion
  • 1 Tbsp Dried Parsley
  • 1 Tbsp Poppy Seeds (I omit, but the original recipe did use them)
  • 1 9.6 oz bag sausage crumbles (I use these)
  • 20 Slices Canadian bacon
  • 9 Slices  Swiss Cheese

Directions

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
  • Cut the loaf of bread in half lengthwise
  • Get about a 3-foot long pieces of aluminum foil and place the bottom half of the loaf on it.
  • In a large bowl, mix together the spread, cream cheese, onion, parsley and poppy seeds (if using) . Once thoroughly combined, fold the sausage into the cream cheese mixture.
  • Spread the mixture evenly on both of the bread halves. Layer the Canadian bacon on the bottom half of the loaf and top with the swiss cheese slices. Place the top half of the bread over the toppings and wrap tightly in foil.
  • Bake the sandwich in the foil for 30-45 minutes, unwrap and bake uncovered for an additional 5-10 minutes.
